How to get licensed as a body piercer in Rhode Island
Becoming a registered body piercer in Rhode Island means meeting the requirements set by the Rhode Island Department of Health. Here is a step-by-step guide to what you need to get started.
Requirements and fees can change. Always confirm the latest details with the Rhode Island Department of Health before applying.
Step 1: Meet the basic qualifications
Rhode Island requires every body piercer to be registered with the Department of Health before practicing. To apply, you must be over 18 years of age, be of good moral character, and be able to demonstrate knowledge of body piercing techniques.
Step 2: Complete your body piercing training
First-time applicants must include documentation of their body piercing training with their application. This is where the academy program comes in, giving you the hands-on experience and documentation you need.
Step 3: Earn your CPR/First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens certificates
Your application must include active CPR/First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens certificates. Make sure both are current when you submit.
Step 4: Gather your required documentation
Your application needs several supporting documents:
- Birth certificate: a certified copy, or proof of lawful entry and eligibility for employment if you were born outside the United States.
- Identification photo: a passport-type 2x3 inch photograph taken within the last year.
- Background check: an original check with stamp and seal from the RI Attorney General's Office or a local police department, dated within the last year. Applicants cover this cost.
- License verification: if you have ever been licensed in another state, that state must send verification directly to RIDOH.
Step 5: Complete the application and pay the fee
Fill out the Tattoo Artist/Body Piercing application from the Rhode Island Department of Health, and include the following:
- Application fee: a non-refundable $90.00 check or money order payable to "RI General Treasurer."
- Optional license certificate: add a separate $30.00 check if you would like a certificate suitable for framing.
- Validity: applications are valid for one year from the day RIDOH receives them, so submit when everything is ready.
Step 6: Schedule and pass the practical examination
Once RIDOH receives your complete application, a Department of Health employee will email you to schedule your exam. You will demonstrate aseptic body piercing technique, and if you do not meet every requirement the first time, you are given two additional opportunities. Questions can be directed to RIDOH at (401) 222-2566.
Step 7: Receive your registration and keep it current
After you meet the application and qualification requirements, the Director issues your registration. It expires every December 31st, and a renewal application is mailed to you before November 1st. Registrations lapsed for two or more years require you to demonstrate your technique again.
